Classic Carlectables Holden LJ XU-1 TORANA #24, 1973 Bathurst 3rd Place, 1:18 Diecast Model Car
The 1973 Hardie Ferodo 1000 would test the 17 Toranas facing the starter. The new distance of 1000 km (the equivalent of 630 miles instead of the 500 of 1972 and previous years) stirred uncertainty of whether the cars wuld survive the distance. Plus the new regulations put the smaller cars like the Torana in the same class as the bigger Ford Falcons and Chrysler Valiant Chargers.
Most of the private team Toranas couldn’t keep up with the Falcons’ pace and mechanical failure thinned the field substantially by mid-race. But the Holden Dealer Team cars used a taller 2.78:1 final drive than the Torana other entries, enabling them to challenge the leading Falcon of Allan Moffat and they did so aggresively. But a pit stop drama meant the Peter Brock / Doug Chivas car placed second, while Colin Bond and co-driver Leo Geoghegan drove a faultless race, crossing the line in 3rd place.
